FLV format is designed for Flash Video. Flash Video is a container file format used over the internet for Adobe Flash Player version 6 and newer. There are two Flash Video formats, one is FLV and the other is F4V. Adobe flash support both FLV/F4V and was developed by Adobe Systems. FLV was originally developed by Macromedia. In the early 2000s FLV was the standard video format for streaming over the internet. FLV based videos are typically encoded with Sorenson Spark or VP6 video compression formats. Apple iOS devices do not support the Flash Player plugin -- thanks Steve Jobs. So FLV is probably not the ideal format for using on social media sites that are primarily mobile optimizied.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave and is a proprietary video format introduced by Microsoft in 1992. AVI videos can contain both audio and video in a container which allows for synchronous audio/video playback. AVI files can also be created without any compression meaning the file can be lossless. This does come at a tradeoff, lossless AVI files are much higher in file size, ranging from about 2-3GB per 1 minute of video. AVI files contain codecs that are suitable for DVD and XVid, meaning if you need to burn a DVD, then it would be wise to convert to an AVI video format.
Simply drag and drop your flv file within the upload zone above. Alternatively you can click the big blue button that says "Upload File". If your file is not of flv type, then the system will automatically detect the file for you.
Once your flv video is uploaded (it doesn't have to be flv, we will automatically detect the format if it's different), you will see a progress bar.
In a matter of seconds (typically) you will see the video, with it's metadata on the right. At the top of the metadata you will see a format dropdown button. The default will be avi, but you can change the format on the fly, once you're happy, you can click the convert button.
Give it a few minutes to convert your flv file into avi (or which ever formats you have defined). Depending on your settings and the output format it could take a moment.
Be patient on this step, you can enter your email if you would like to get a downloadable link when it is ready. This is nice if you need to leave and get a link while on the go. When it's done you will have a free avi file that you can download with no strings attached. If you would like to edit the video, then Motionbox has an awesome video editor for you.
