GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format and is a bitmap image format. GIFs were initally released in 1987 on June 15th. The reason this format is so popular is because of it's portability on the internet. It supports animations and a separate palette of up to 256 colors for each frame. You may know GIFs today as the main medium for many popular online memes. While GIFs don't support audio or long video files, they might be a good format to convert a video into if you're trying to make a short GIF based meme that loops itself. You can also edit clips inside the Motionbox editor to make cool GIF based memes.
FLV format is designed for Flash Video. Flash Video is a container file format used over the internet for Adobe Flash Player version 6 and newer. There are two Flash Video formats, one is FLV and the other is F4V. Adobe flash support both FLV/F4V and was developed by Adobe Systems. FLV was originally developed by Macromedia. In the early 2000s FLV was the standard video format for streaming over the internet. FLV based videos are typically encoded with Sorenson Spark or VP6 video compression formats. Apple iOS devices do not support the Flash Player plugin -- thanks Steve Jobs. So FLV is probably not the ideal format for using on social media sites that are primarily mobile optimizied.
Simply drag and drop your gif file within the upload zone above. Alternatively you can click the big blue button that says "Upload File". If your file is not of gif type, then the system will automatically detect the file for you.
Once your gif video is uploaded (it doesn't have to be gif, we will automatically detect the format if it's different), you will see a progress bar.
In a matter of seconds (typically) you will see the video, with it's metadata on the right. At the top of the metadata you will see a format dropdown button. The default will be flv, but you can change the format on the fly, once you're happy, you can click the convert button.
Give it a few minutes to convert your gif file into flv (or which ever formats you have defined). Depending on your settings and the output format it could take a moment.
Be patient on this step, you can enter your email if you would like to get a downloadable link when it is ready. This is nice if you need to leave and get a link while on the go. When it's done you will have a free flv file that you can download with no strings attached. If you would like to edit the video, then Motionbox has an awesome video editor for you.
