GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format and is a bitmap image format. GIFs were initally released in 1987 on June 15th. The reason this format is so popular is because of it's portability on the internet. It supports animations and a separate palette of up to 256 colors for each frame. You may know GIFs today as the main medium for many popular online memes. While GIFs don't support audio or long video files, they might be a good format to convert a video into if you're trying to make a short GIF based meme that loops itself. You can also edit clips inside the Motionbox editor to make cool GIF based memes.
MOV is also known as a QuickTime File Format. This file format was developed by Apple Inc in 1991 on December 2nd and made the format public March 2001. It is an MPEG 4 video container that is primarily used with Apple's QuickTime program. MOV files are similar to MP4 video containers, however they are less compressed, higher in quality and higher in size. An MOV video can hold many different video formats and multimedia — audio, video, and text — in the same file on different tracks. MOV files can be tricky in browser based video editing software and we recommend converting to MP4 before uploading to Motionbox.
Simply drag and drop your gif file within the upload zone above. Alternatively you can click the big blue button that says "Upload File". If your file is not of gif type, then the system will automatically detect the file for you.
Once your gif video is uploaded (it doesn't have to be gif, we will automatically detect the format if it's different), you will see a progress bar.
In a matter of seconds (typically) you will see the video, with it's metadata on the right. At the top of the metadata you will see a format dropdown button. The default will be mov, but you can change the format on the fly, once you're happy, you can click the convert button.
